SPATIAL

INTRODUCTION

(given at the start of the experience)

Welcome to The Cave

Plato's theory of the Cave describes a group of people who are chained in a cave, only able to shadows on the wall. They believe that these shadows are the only reality, as they have never known anything else.

(One person is freed and makes his way out of the cave to discover the real world)

Plato's theory is based on the story of Prometheus.

THE PROJECT

This project emerged from a school assignment, where we needed to design an installation in groups.

We made groups based on our own specializations and what roles we would fit in. My task was to make the concept work, concept design, and later on I would be responsible for the overall design and feel of the installation.

I started with researching the Greek mythology and Plato's theory and wrote a first version of the story we wanted to tell. We had a few consultations about the story and I made some adjustments. Eventually we had the right story to tell.

We wanted to tell everyone the same story but from different perspectives. Because ones truth can be different from someone else's.

In our story we had three perspectives, those from Prometheus, Zeus and Mankind. For each perspective we projected a different animations in RGB colors on the wall. When entering the experience people got to choose their own glasses. In this way they 'chose' their perspective on the story, without knowing at forehand. The glasses were provided with RGB color filters so the participators wouldn't see anything but their own animation.

To make the experience a bit more interesting we added a torch to the room. The torch started with Zeus, later on the torch transferred to Mankind, with the help of Prometheus. We color of the light was adjustable so you could only see and use the torch when it was in the hands of the right perspective.  With the torch you could read the 'secret' message related to the story. The question was meant to create a conversation about the different perspectives afterwords.

MY PART

After I made a working concept and completed writing the story, I started focussing on the space we had. In the first drawing I made at the beginning of the project, you see the bow with RGB lasers in the background. Which represents the use of new technology in an old environment. I decided to make the bow myself. I loved this part because it made the experience come to life. I crafted everything with cardboard, paper flowers and light. If we look back it became the statement piece of the installation.

THE SOUL ROOM

This is one of my most recent projects, about finding the soul that seems to be lost in the modern music industry.

My idea was to create a room where your body will be connected with the music with the help of a big light. â€‹The room is peaceful and made of wood. On the wall is a big panel light made from wood which will flow like someones breathing. After you connect with the breathing pattern you will be able to feel the music better. My goal is that people will be able to recognize more music with soul.

This design is part of something bigger I'm still working on

MAQUETTE

I’ve always had a fascination for shows and big spaces being transformed into a different world. I’m trying to find my way to express this interest and combine it with my preference for crafting by hand and drawing. On this page you can find a model I made a while ago. I really want to make more of these in the future and have plans on combining it with music.
